Food is my jam. And it’s not every day that I share a post here on the blog that isn’t food related. BUT. In real life, I’ve started making a lot of changes to my home environment and to the products I use on my body.
I’ve started paying attention to the ingredients used in my makeup, shampoo, lotion… even in my nail polish. I’ve replaced or given away a lot of my beauty products so that I can start filling up my makeup bag and my bathroom cabinets with healthier alternatives.
Finding these non-toxic beauty products hasn’t been easy. In fact, just a few months ago, I called Sephora to ask if they carried any non-toxic makeup. This is how the conversation went:
Me (Ashley): Hi, do you carry any non-toxic makeup in the store?
Sephora: Non-toxic… like, you want to eat it?
Yes, Sephora. I want to spend my money on your overpriced makeup so that I can eat it. (major eye roll).
Thankfully, I found Beautycounter.
If you haven’t heard of this company, they’ve been in the news recently – for trying to convince Congress to clean up the cosmetics industry. I love Beautycounter because they take the time to screen every single ingredient they use to ensure that none are linked to cancer, infertility, hormone disruption or early puberty. They’re very transparent too – when you go to the website to buy one of their products, you can see all of the ingredients used to make it.
Another reason I love Beautycounter? My husband has very sensitive skin and asked me to stop wearing my daily makeup and using my regular shampoo over a year ago. Now I’m just so happy to be able to wear makeup and use normal shampoo (instead of some baby brand) again! Roby can now kiss my cheek/touch my face without having an allergic skin reaction! I know that might be TMI but you know what – it makes me happy
This beauty line is NOT for those of you who are perfectly content using beet juice to color your lips and coconut oil for everything else (I know, coconut oil is magical). Don’t get me wrong, if you do that – I respect you and your decision 1000 percent. It’s just… I miss using real makeup & skincare that works for me.
If you have certain makeup that you absolutely love and can’t live without (i.e. the perfect foundation) then use that for special occasions when you need heavy coverage. Try to use a more natural foundation for your daily makeup needs.
There are a bunch of Beautycounter products that I love and I’m going to share my favorites with you (scroll all the way to the bottom for a few pics!), but if there’s something I haven’t listed that you’re interested in – get it and try it out. The company has a great 60-day return policy!
Some of my favorites: Sunscreen (Sunscreen Stick & Sunscreen Lotion for body. I also love their tinted spf 20 for days when I don’t want to wear foundation), ALL THE MAKEUP (Dew Tint Moisturizer for light coverage/daily wear and Tint Foundation for a work or a night out), Lengthening Mascara, Blush (love the flamingo/apricot color), Concealer, Lip Sheer (I love ALL the colors esp. raisin, plum and currant), Lip Gloss, the Charcoal Bar or Charcoal Mask (removes impurities without drying out your skin), Hair Products, and the Face Collection. They keep adding new products so once I test those, I’ll continue to update this page with new favorites.
