A couple of years ago, I shared a blog post titled the best thing I ever made and you guys… I did it again! 😉 A little over a month ago, I gave birth to my son, Ace Thomas!
Big brother Tony is so smitten! I was worried about how my toddler would react to a new addition to the family but he is so in love with Ace! He always wants to hold the baby and “pet him” (pat his head) lol. I have been soaking up every minute of these newborn days because I know how quickly they fly by.
Whenever I’m overwhelmed with emotion, I write poems. It’s my thing – I’ve been doing it since elementary school (lol granted back then they were about puppies and bears). Here’s the first one I wrote for my baby Ace ❤️
You might be baby number two,
But kiddo, we are so excited to be parents to you!
You’re our world, you’re our Ace.
You and Tony share first place.
Our two little boys – best buds and brothers,
Thankful you’ll be there for each other.
Ace, you’re the reason we are now four.
You are everything we wanted and more.

Hi Ashley, did you feed dals to your boys when they were infants (9 months), and if so, which recipes would you recommend? I was looking at your masoor dal recipe but wasn’t sure if it would be better to cook dal without the garlic, spices, etc. I’d love to know your experience!
Ashley - My Heart Beets says
Hi Elyse, yes, I did! Here’s a dal recipe you can easily adapt – in the post, I share a pic of my youngest when he was 8 months old eating it and include notes on what spices to use and how to make it more nutrient-dense: https://myheartbeets.com/instant-pot-everyday-dal/ I also have a post about feeding kids Indian food that you might find useful: https://myheartbeets.com/how-to-get-kids-to-eat-indian-food/
Masoor dal works, khichdi is great. For my kiddos, I’d start with split lentils first and see how they did and then move on to beans like black eyed peas, chickpeas (cooked soft/mashed a bit) etc. When they were little, I’d use any spices that added flavor without heat (I skipped cayenne at first, but I did slowly add it in as the months went by. You can go by your kiddo too – it was clear early on that my older didn’t like anything spicy, whereas my younger one would gobble it all up. Now that my younger son is much older (3) and can talk he’ll ask me to add “spicy” (cayenne) to his eggs lol.
