Paleo Hamburger Buns

Paleo bread doesn’t have to be complicated. You shouldn’t have to jump through bread baking hoops to get a decent gluten-free bun for your burger. This grilling season, ditch the lettuce wrapped burgers and make these incredibly easy Paleo Hamburger Buns instead. You can make them on the grill right next to your juicy burgers!

My hot buns are delish (sorry, can’t help myself 😂). They’re nut-free AND egg-free AND you only need 5 ingredients to make them. Mix the ingredients together, roll the dough out into little balls and flatten them out. If you make them too thick, they’ll get gooey inside so make sure they’re nice and thin.

You can cook these in a pan, in the oven, or right on your grill! Since it’s summer and most meals are made on the grill, I decided to use my grilling stone (great for cooking things like fish, veggies, anything that you don’t want falling through the grates) to make these. Cooking them directly on the grill might work too – but I haven’t tried this (leave a comment to let us know if you do try).

  • Mix all of the ingredients together in a bowl.
  • Grease your hands with some oil or ghee and take a rounded tablespoon worth of dough and roll it into a ball.
  • Flatten it out and put it on a baking stone on the grill (if you don’t have a stone, see note below).
  • Preheat the grill and stone to medium heat (250-300 degrees).
  • Put the lid on the grill and cook for 6-7 minutes, flip the bread over and cook other side for 5 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.


If you don’t have a grilling stone, you can cook this bread in the oven or on your stove top. The cooking time will vary - cook until golden brown.

    Made these burger buns & they are yummy. Thanks for posting the recipe. I cooked mine on the stovetop & they came out well. Yum! I then made another batch & added a tbsp of honey, oh!!! amazing! I made enough & left them in the refrigerator overnight. The next day, I warmed the hamburger bun in the toaster & stovetop, both are fine & they taste good. How did you get them so round??? I tried a couple of methods but I could not get them perfectly round. I also used coconut oil to handle the hamburger buns. Thank you for this recipe.

      I made them yesterday. I sprayed my hands with coconut oil and made them into a ball, then when I put them on the electric griddle i used, I sprayed the ball and used my fingers to flatten them out right on the grill. These remind me so much of my FULL of gluten indian flat bread that I adore! So nice to have something I can make pretty quick and still enjoy chew bread. I added olive oil and garlic salt to both sides. These would be so good for make Gyros!! They are quite gewy on the inside, so I thought I might try my tortilla press to make them thinner… just hope they will come off without sticken to the parchment…. will have to give it a good spray:)

    I have a gluten free flour blend (it has a bunch of different kinds of flour) do you think that will work in place of the tapioca and coconut flour?

    Can I substitute tapioca flour for something else? I have almond flour, coconut flour, flaxseed flour… I just really don’t want to have to buy tapioca flour, too!

    I shared this recipe on my FB blog and someone quickly informed me that coconuts are tree nuts, therefore this is not nut free. What’s the best way to answer that?

      Hi Patti, first, thanks for sharing my recipe 🙂 Now to answer your question – while the FDA has labeled coconuts as tree nuts, they are actually not nuts… they are considered a drupe. I realize that can be confusing. Most people with nut allergies can tolerate coconuts but that said, I’d advise your reader to talk to their doctor if they have any concerns. After all, we’re food bloggers, not doctors!

      Coconut is not a botanical nut; it is classified as a fruit, even though the Food and Drug Administration recognizes coconut as a tree nut. While allergic reactions to coconut have been documented, most people who are allergic to tree nuts can safely eat coconut.
