I have never dealt with fresh nutmeg, which is called for in your fabulous spicy beef and butternut squash dish. How do you prep it? Peel, cut in half, grate it? And what is a handful amount? I didn’t know it is even available….where?

  2. Manjari Peiris says

    Could you kindly whether I may make Naan using;

Atta flour and mix with baking powder and coconut milk.

    Thanks.

I made the Keema Curry (80/20 lean beef) in Instant Pot Duo. The taste and flavor was wonderful but the Keema became LUMPY. That was a big disappointment. Can you tell me why this happened and how to correct it next time? Thanks.

  4. Gerard says

I just picked my first two fresh okra from my garden this afternoon. I searched and found your Indian okra recipe. OMG it was delicious. I did modify a bit, using bacon grease and added some Curry and Ginger finally also added some diced fresh tomatoes and a tiny jalapeno. I’ve saved this recipe because my okra will be coming on strong I’ve got plenty of tomatoes to pick so I’ll be in hog heaven from my garden.

You can add dry pudding mix to the Aldi cake mix and make the cake any flavor as well as adding a cup of sour cream and a tea of vanilla an it makes a very moist cake. I make them for friends and family and you can’t tell it is gluten free and I make a chocolate ganache icing.

I just made your coconut flour naan bread. It is amazing! I have tried lots of recipes and was living disappointed. It was fast to fix and tasted delicious. The only thing I would change is the amount of salt. I place 1 tsp. of salt as recipe said and it was too much for me. I will try 1/2 tsp. salt next time. Great flavor and looked beautiful. I’m hooked! Thank you sooooo much! Can you come up with a coconut flour crepe recipe that doesn’t use a ton of eggs please?

  7. NinaAnne says

Hi Ashley, thanks for this recipe, very excited to try it. Can I freeze the rotis bread after they are cooked? When I bake I always make more so I can freeze the extra. Thanks again, love your blog!! ❤️

I love your onion masala recipe and have been making it since the last few years and have tried most of your dishes that use onion masala! Thank you for it!

For the matar paneer when I make it without the cream the curry is watery. What substitute would you recommend or how would you recommend tweaking the onion masala quantity to make it without heavy cream?

Accidentally put in 1 tsp cayenne vs what was called for, but it’s still delicious and a great recipe! Used heavy cream but left out the green pepper. Served with basmati rice, butternut squash, and apple raisin compote. Thank you for nice recipe! I’m signed up for more.

I used to be on your mailing list before, but for some time now, stopped receiving any updates from you. I have resubscribed to your blog and look forward to seeing new recipes from you. A while back I had purchased your Indian Food Under Pressure cook book and the book accidentally got thrown out with some other magazines to my horror. My cousin just gifted me this book from Amazon and am truly happy to have it again.

    • Ashley - My Heart Beets says

Hi Freny, I know – I’m sorry for not sending out any new emails. I had my third baby and decided to take a little time from sharing new recipes for now – but all my previous stuff is still online and available! I appreciate you reaching out and am so glad my recipes have been helpful for you 🙂

Just discovered your wonderful web site. Coming back after COVID I’m rearranging some things and the food I eat is high on the list. Lived for five years in the Punjab as a child and love Indian food. Something about your approach is very inviting and I’m putting together my grocery list for the week based on your recipes. And your use of the InstaPot is appreciated, temps in Arizona hit 108* today so time in the kitchen is rationed. Best wishes to you and your family.
PS A recipe for Ghee would be appreciated. It seems to be selling for prices influenced by it’s being called ‘yellow gold’.

Hello Ashley ! I have a question about the Instant Pot goat curry. Our Indian store here has cut up goat with bone in 2+ pound sizes which I get for both of us. What size is good with the pressure times? Some of the bone pieces are 3-4 “. Do you cook without cutting them again or not? Thank you.

Your site looks good. I’m looking for the type of wonderfully spicy (baked?) chicken livers we had at the Nepalese Embassy in London a few years ago. The ambassador said,”These will be too spicy for you.” My wife replied,”He will love them.” The chicken livers were outrageously good.

I have loved your website and hadn’t used it for a while. I came back to it this week and have to say I’m disappointed to see how much advertising you have added. I know it generates revenue but it’s distracting enough that I find myself not using your site as much anymore.

    • Ashley - My Heart Beets says

Alex, glad to have you back – hope you stick around! I believe there’s a way to turn ads off on your end. I do need to keep them up on my site though as blogging is my full-time job. I appreciate the feedback though and will see if there’s anything my ad company can do to make them less distracting.

Amazing stuff! I’ve made several batches now, and go through the frozen pucks pretty quickly.
I’d like to share with a non-cooking friend in another state. Can your onion masala be hot water bath canned? I’m hoping that the tomato makes it acidic enough to do so.

    Hi Ashley,
Love your recipes! Your Instantpot saag recipe is excellent because you wisely don’t call for adding water. Most other recipes I’ve come across do and it winds up watery whereas yours comes out perfectly creamy. Can I put in a request for an Instantpot saag gosht recipe? Thanks!

I really appreciate what you’re putting out 🙂

Can’t thank you enough Ashley! I’m not a great cook by any means — I’ve tried 3 instant pot recipes (Mango Cheesecake, Carrot Halwa and the latest Chocolate Cheesecake) and they’ve all been a big hit. My wife and friends absolutely LOVED them. Double thanks for eggless recipes 🙂

  66. Anna Vairavan says

Hello Ashley, Thanks for sharing your culinary skills. Your recipes and Facebook groups are inspirational. I try all your recipes. Your onion masala is my weekday time saver. I can’t imagine by days without this. As I was watching your dates roll video, thought of checking with you about your knife. It glides so smooth. Do you mind sharing what knife you use or you have recommendation for knife set. Will appreciate the same. Thanks so much for sharing.

    • My Heart Beets says

Anna, I’m so glad to hear that! Thank you for the kind words 🙂 As for the knife in the video, I’m not sure as that belongs to my videographer, however, I recently bought a couple of Wüsthof knives and like them so far. My parents recently got some Cutco knives they bought from Costco and I actually think I like theirs better – so maybe look into that as well. Hope that helps!

  67. Lorraine says

I LOVE your site and your recipes, Ashley. I was just looking for an Instant Pot mung dal recipe (easy and fab) and found your wonderful trove of recipes. I’ve spent enough time in India over the years to fall in love with the both the complexity and simplicity of the cuisine . I’m looking forward to trying more. Today, I’m going to make the pumpkin dal and the Paleo Roti. Excellent! I will be sharing your site with all my yoga pals!

      • Anuradha Amalendu Bhunia says

Hi Ashley, I want to try paleo roti or nan. But, my husband is diabetic so using 1/2 cup of tapioca starch is not good for him. Can I use raw banana flour instead along with coconut flour or flax seed meal?

        • Ashley - My Heart Beets says

Hi Anuradha, I’m sorry but I haven’t tried this using raw banana flour so I’m not sure. I’m also not very knowledgeable about diabetes so I’d hate to steer you in the wrong direction. If you experiment, please let us know how it goes.

Thanks to your nomato onion masala recipe, I am able to deliciously incorporate more beetroot into my diet and my son whom we recently discovered, is allergic to tomatoes and cinnamon, gets to enjoy things like chicken curry and dal again. I’ve even used it to make nomato spaghetti bolognese and got lots of praise for it. I am truly grateful.

Help! I am helping with a formal dinner for about 30 people, 12 or so of whom are vegetarians (and fairly open-minded eaters). I’m planning on using an Instant Pot, partly just because the food will stay hot. It’s Beef Bourguignon for the carnivores. Any suggestions on an “upscale” dish for the vegetarians? I haven’t figured out yet if it will need to be gluten-free, but that can’t hurt. I have your Indian Food Under Pressure with a lot of wonderful recipes. I don’t have South Asian Persuasion, but if that’s got the right recipe, I will happily try it. I have plenty of time to make any number of trial recipes before the big day. Thanks!

  73. Dorothy L Brinckerhoff says

I’m new to Indian Cuisine and I never really “took” to my Instant Pot until quite recently. I made your Green Bean Thoran recipe two nights ago and I’m hooked. So delicious!

  74. Deb G. says

Hi. I love Indian food, but so many Indian recipes have tomatoes as ingredients and I have a tomato allergy. Any suggestions for a substitution? Tomatillos are okay for me…similar texture and moisture content, but obviously different flavor. Help?

    • My Heart Beets says

I’ve been wanting to try a nightshade free onion masala blend using beets but haven’t gotten around to it yet – so for now I’d just choose recipes without tomatoes! I get asked about this a lot so I’ll work on compiling a list and will share it soon!

  75. Heather says

Hi Ashley, I am so excited to have found you! I was gifted an Instant Pot and Urvashi Pitre’s cookbook a couple of years ago, and have been using her recipes for a while in my Instant Pot and have really enjoyed them. We are having friends for dinner this Saturday and they asked if I would be willing to let them cook with me since they love Indian food but have been nervous to make it. Although we love the cuisine, I have always been reluctant to have people eat with us when we do Indian, because I’m just not sure what entrees to pair with what sides. I did a google search for Indian dinner party menus and it lead me to you. Thank you so much for putting options together and making it a bit easier for me! This Saturday, I plan on serving your Lamb Rogan Josh with Matar Pulao, Aloo Gobi, and Naan. For dessert, we will have the Mango Cheesecake (just ordered the mango pulp). Does that sound like a good combination of wet and dry? I’d love to hear your feedback and will certainly let you know how it goes! Thanks!

    Hi Ashley,
I’m new to your recipes. I enjoyed reading your story. I want to make your chicken & wild rice for my granddaughter when she comes to visit this weekend from college. She is both gluten-free and dairy free (as well as allergic to soy). I was excited to see the chicken & wild rice recipe, however I don’t have a pressure cooker. How can I adapt your recipe so I can prepare this without a pressure cooker? Thank you for your help. You will be helping this Mimi (grandmother) score big points 😊

  81. margaret says

hi ashley, i have been looking for a great indian food resource for awhile, and i think i just found it!– your advice is great, and so are the recipes- i have been trying to decide if i should buy a pressure cooker or an instapot? i visit india frequently and everyone there LOVES their pressure cookers- i wonder if you could weigh in on your preference and why??? i have just been using my old slow cookers and tho i turn out wonderful dishes with them, i wonder if i am missing something? thanks so much for your beautiful site and enthusiasm for the worlds best cuisine- i enjoyed seeing pictures of your lovely family and the spoiled dog too. and it was hard to say which wedding garb was most beautiful!

    • My Heart Beets says

Margaret, hooray!! I’m so glad you found my blog 🙂 I prefer electric pressure cookers and actually wrote a blog post about why I like them for Indian cooking if you want to check it out! I had an old school pressure cooker from India that I got for my wedding and gave it to my mom as soon as I got my IP. Now my mom only uses her IP too! Electric pressure cookers are like slow cookers in that there’s no need to babysit anything on the stove but it cooks food faster. It’s also much easier to clean than a slow cooker or a stovetop pressure cooker. I hope that helps!

  82. Ann Marie says

Just found your site and really enjoyed reading your story and looking at all of your awesome recipes. 85. Dana Ash says

Although I’m fairly adventurous with food, I must admit to being basically ignorant about Indian food. So I was a bit surprised when a friend gave me an article from our local newspaper about you and your “Indian Food Under Pressure” cookbook (I love my Instant Pot, too!). I had to research and mail order some of the spices, but have now tried all three recipes from the article and am newly in love. I’m looking forward to continuing my education about Indian food and spices, have signed up for your newsletter and will be purchasing the full cookbook! Thanks so much for broadening my horizons!

  86. Sandra Mazliah says

My sister bought me your book as a surprise for my new Instant Pot after I took her to her first Indian Restaurant, and she fell in love! I’m also trying to lose weight and I’m amazed how healthy so much of the cooking is being veggie and spice heavy. I’ve reduced some of the ghee and coconut milk and the recipes are still so delicious. My husband said this Saag was BETTER then the one we get at our local place, and the chicken biryani and butter chicken were “to die for”. I discovered your blog when I looked up “Garam Masala” and made yours fresh. Thank you, thank you, thank you for making one of my favorite cuisines so accessible and easy.

    • My Heart Beets says

Sandra, this makes me so happy to hear!! And wow, that is such a compliment! If you get a chance, would you mind leaving me a review on amazon? Thank you so much for letting me know how much you like my book 🙂

I lived up there from 1951-1968 in Shadyside near Walnut street. After traveling for years, including one year in India, I moved back in ’75 for a few years . What a wonderful small City feel Pittsburgh has and it’s food culture and many different International cultures make it one of the best places to live. Thanks again for your great recipes ,Lucy .

Lucy, thank you! I’m really happy to hear that you’ve been following for a couple years 🙂 Yes, I’m still in Pittsburgh and we are here to stay – which I’m so happy about! We live in Shadyside next to Walnut street – I walk there almost daily! I couldn’t agree more about the lovely small city feel!

    Hi Ashley,
My husband, John finally broke me down with the purchase of an InsantPot.I fought against for a an entire year because I just didn’t want another appliance, in addition to the others that we have🙄. I’ve been experimenting with the easy stuff( eggs, oatmeal…) and t decided it’s time to really see what this pot can really do. That’s when I started looking for Indian recipes. Your blog came up to when I searched for butter chicken recipes. What a surprise it was when I clicked on a FAQ and saw a picture of you and Roby! My in-laws were friends with Roby’s parents(same malyali circle) and John and I attended your beautiful wedding too. Congratulations on your new baby! He looks adorable!
Fantastic job on the blog too. I’ve made 3 dishes so far and they have all turned out great!
Say hi to Roby and for us:)
    Divya

Hi Divya, it’s so great to hear from you!! I’m happy you’re liking your Instant Pot and even happier that you’ve tried three of my recipes! Hopefully we will all get to meet again some time soon 🙂

Hello Ashley – I’ve been infatuated with Indian vegetarian cooking and spices and the general way Indian culture respect the human body. So excited to see your beautiful blog. This weekend, a new Indian grocery shop opened in my neighborhood – and it’s the first of its kind in our town! I purchased some young okra from them and found your recipe, which I will use. I look forward to more yummy-ness to come.

Ok. I found your site looking for a ground beef recipe. I don’t remember the name of it, but it is ground beef, potatoes, and carrots with meat Masada and various spices. I did most of the spices and the meat Masada (it smells absolutely awesome!) But had no curry leaves. I can’t afford them on amazon but I’m going to try to find them locally. I have no idea about Indian cuisine and the names of the dishes, but I’m excited about learning and trying some new recipes!

Hi Ashley how refreshing, so few ingredients and the end result so rewarding, will try your waffles and naan bread with spring onions like the Vietnamese spring onion pancake that of course uses wheat flour. This certainly sounds better. Love all your recipes. Jessie

    Hi Ashley
I just bought your recipe book and drooled through every entry. I’m going to try the Naan recipe and probably make a lamb dish on the weekend.
    Have a few questions –
    1. I am gluten intolerant and also have to be careful about sugar. I note that you use coconut sugar which has a lower glycemic index but is still too sweet for me. What should I substitute and in what ratio?
    2. Can the Naan’s and roti’s be frozen? I’d like to make a batch of them on the weekend when I have more time and then pop them out as needed. Any special way to defrost or warm them up?
    3. The big thing I miss about eating Paleo is that I should forego my favorite comfort food in the world — dahl. Do you have any lentil-free dahl?

    Thanks, Karen

    • My Heart Beets says

Hi Karen! You can definitely freeze the naan, just thaw it out and re-heat it in an oven or on a skillet. I don’t have a paleo daal recipe but I highly suggest that you try my mulligatawny soup – I think you will love it! And, I’m not sure what recipe you’re asking about to sub coconut sugar? Please let me know what you think of the recipes!! 🙂

Seems like the naan bread has got us all then!
I cannot believe how easy, how quick and versatile it is!
Joined immediately and looking forward to more things like this. I am not paleo but carefully gf, yeast and egg free so it is hard to get real food and things that I am happy to eat and share.
Even waffle and I had a little machine (yes, gadget mad too) bought for me, lies unused. I think it needs something to get me into it. I love my little cake machine too (any recipes for that are very welcome please)
I am not a cook but the 3 ingredient or so really is perfect for me and nothing to put aside promising myself I will get round to it.

Hello Ash…..I just lucked onto your blog and am SO excited by your Indian Paleo recipes! I have been truly missing some of the old flour faves and now you have introduced some delish alternatives….THANK YOU!!

I am so madly in love with your site! I have been paleo for almost a year now and, though I love roasts and salads, I was so excited to see your recipes to try something new! This is an awesome resource for those of us who want to cook outside of the realm of typical American/Euro fare while following the parameters of Paleo. Thank you and keep up the great work!

    Hi Ashley!

So stoked about your site! I went paleo a while ago and with a Kenyan upbringing it was hard finding food I liked. Kenyan food is HIGHLY grain based and starchy but with alot of Indian influences so when I saw paleo Indian style? Imagine my joy! I cannot wait to try your paleo naan since I still have a love affair with chapati so a healthier option will be amazeballs.

I have subscribed and look forward to all that you have to offer. Seriously thank you for this and I wish you all the best in everything else you do 🙂

    • My Heart Beets says

Hi Chris! That’s awesome – so glad you found my website! I’ve actually been working on a Kenyan goat curry – hopefully I’ll have that up sometime this fall/winter. Glad to have you here! 🙂

Thank you for putting this out there. I am excited to make dozens of your recipes already.

This site is fantastic! My husband and I did away with gluten, grains, legumes and dairy at the beginning of the year (your tummy trouble story sounds so much like my own!). I’ll admit we were pretty bummed out by the diet for a number of weeks. But your butter chicken recipe was a game changer! We both LOVE Indian food and your recipes are so great to follow. Have you thought of publishing a cookbook? I would totally buy it! Thanks so much!

    • My Heart Beets says

Thanks, Jen! Your comment just made my day! Hopefully a cookbook is in my future but let’s see 🙂 Hope you’ll let me know how any other recipes turn out for you!

Hi! Thank you for coconut oil contest! I really want to try it, and half the recipes that I’ve seen on here! Lol!

Can’t wait to try your naan bread recipe. I am gluten/dairy free and it’s hard to find a tasty bread recipe. Going shopping tonight to buy the ingredients…….excited!!!! So many ideas 🙂

  105. Sue Joy says

Loving your naan bread recipe, I made curry pasties with the smaller crepe style and cooked only one side this week and made a curry beef mince filling with vegetables. I went to a Mexican night this week and I took the naan bread to eat with Mexican dinner.
